What is Holistic Phytotherapy

Plants play an essential role in maintaining the health and natural balance of the body. The beneficial properties of plants have been recognized for thousands of years. The Neanderthals probably already had rudimentary knowledge of the use of plants, as was revealed at the Sheridan archeological site in Iran, where 60,000 years old pollen was discovered. Such pollen still plays an important role in oriental medicine. Among the oldest documents on phytotherapy are those of herbalist Shên Nung (2700 BC).

The vegetable kingdom has been a source of nutrition and health since the beginning of time. Today, science allows us to identify the presence and concentration of chemical compounds that give plants their beneficial properties. Since the moment Paracelso (1493-1541) first defined the concept of an active ingredient and began to methodically study the chemical composition of plants, phytotherapy has evolved in such a way as to find today its maximum expression. Today, advances in scientific knowledge about nature and the properties of plants parallel an increasing recognition of the valuable role played by plants in terms of our overall wellness and the concept of health.

Naturally, good health should not be defined simply as the inexistence of negative symptoms in our body. Good health cannot be defined merely as the absence of disease. Good health is a personal, ongoing journey towards maturity and optimum body function at all levels. In this sense, holistic phytotherapy has as its goal the promotion of optimum health and the complete balance of our body, strengthening our physiological processes and returning the body to a state of inner harmony.

The holistic focus means acting simultaneously in all physio-pathological realms involved in an illness, making full use of the numerous active ingredients contained in plants as well as their distinct modes of action. Natural extracts provide us with an invaluable resource that is highly effective, very affordable, and free from side effects. They enable the most beneficial essence of the plants completely bioavailable to our bodies, thus assisting us in obtaining that optimum state of integral health and wellness to which we all aspire.
